Archival Obsessions: The Papers of Malcolm Lowry
Malcolm Lowry (1909-1957), author of Under the Volcano (1947), spent the
happiest and most productive years of his life at Dollarton in North
Vancouver. After his death, the Special Collections Division at the
University of British Columbia Library acquired the first of its collection
of Lowry manuscripts from his widow Margerie Bonner Lowry. Since that time
the collection has grown to become a mecca for scholars around the world.
Please join us to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of
Under the Volcano and of Lowry collecting and scholarship at the University
of British Columbia Library:
COLLOQUIUM: Archival Obsessions: The Papers of Malcolm Lowry
DATE: Tuesday, April 8, 1997.

PLACE: Heritage Room (left inside the front entrance), Main Library,
University of British Columbia.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Sherrill Grace, Professor, Department of English, The
University of British Columbia. Editor, Sursum Corda! The Collected Letters
of Malcolm Lowry, 2 volumes (1995, 1996). In her talk "Lift Up Your
Magnifying Glass" she will speak about using the Lowry archives in the
editing of the letters.
SPECIAL GUEST: Dr. Martin Lowry, Professor, University of Warwick, and
nephew of Malcolm Lowry.
PANEL: Kathy Chung, Doctoral candidate, University of Toronto; Basil
Stuart-Stubbs Professor and University Librarian Emeritus, The University
of British Columbia; Anne Yandle, Librarian Emeritus, Special Collections
Division, The University of British Columbia.
