Chasing the ghost of Malcolm Lowry: Recollections by Richard Hauer Costa

TORONTO--An emeritus professor of English at Texas A&M University, while doubting that new books can be life-changing discoveries for today's readers, told delegates to the recent Malcolm Lowry Symposium here that Lowry's 1947 "contemporary classic" novel UNDER THE VOLCANO had --literally--changed his.

The Malcolm Lowry Colloquium, UBC, April 8, 1997 - Archival Obsessions: The Papers of Malcolm Lowry

Malcolm Lowry (1909-1957), author of Under the Volcano (1947), spent the happiest and most productive years of his life at Dollarton in North Vancouver. After his death, the Special Collections Division at the University of British Columbia Library acquired the first of its collection of Lowry manuscripts from his widow Margerie Bonner Lowry. Since that time the collection has grown to become a mecca for scholars around the world.

Please join us to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of Under the Volcano and of Lowry collecting and scholarship at the University of British Columbia Library

Works by and about Malcolm Lowry

I've added two new bibliographies to the web site. If you know of any books that aren't, and should be, on the list please email me the information. I'll have some links up shortly so that you can order a few of the newer ones online - but not through me. Stay tuned.

Welcome to Under the Volcano: The Crossword

I've completed the Under the Volcano Crossword. The clues are related to the novel Under the Volcano. Some of the answers will seem incredibly easy if you've read the novel and brutally impossible if you haven't. We're always looking for other clues or themes so if you have any let send an email. Keep your list short - 10 words and clues maximum - so the crossword will fit your screen. You'll be able to solve it over the Internet provided your browser is Java enabled. I'll also be looking for clues and tips so send those in if you have any. The crossword has to be limited to 10 or 12 words in order to fit on the screen.

Guest Book

The guest book is now operational. (Jan.28) Look for it along the left index.

Photo galleries

We're pleased to announce that the first two stages of the photo galleries are complete. The churchyard at the Ripe Parish Church have been completed.

I still have to complete two more phases:

  • Photos from Cuernavaca.
  • Photos from Oakville and Niagra on the Lake.

    All help is appreciated.
