Inside the Volcano: My Life with Malcolm Lowry came out in 2000. This book is by Jan Gabriel -- yes, Lowry's ex-wife and *the* fictional Yvonne from Under the Volcano. This is a very poetic and tragic account of her relationship with Lowry during the development of his masterpiece. It is as equally important as Pursued by Furies. I strongly recommend it to all Lowry fans.

Are you looking for Pursued by Furies: A Life of Malcolm Lowry? This is Gordon Bowker's phenomenal and exhaustive biography of Malcolm Lowry first published in 1993.

Malcolm Lowry wrote Under the Volcano. The book takes place on the Mexican Day of the Dead.

I asked an English professor at Guelph if our class could study it but he acted insulted. "Who wants to read a book about a drunk?" But then again he'd never read it. Another professor told me about the "tradition."

In 1939, destitute and begging for beer money on the streets of Vancouver, he wrote to John Buchan, author of Twist of the Screw, a.k.a. Lord Tweedsmuir, the Governor-General, asking for help. Tweedsmuir sent $50 but Lowry lost it on a horse bet.

In 1945, Lowry's squatter's shack on the Indian Arm of the Burrard Inlet burned down. At the time the City of Vancouver was trying to evict him from the land. In 1987 the city created a park on the land and named it after him.

Lowry fled to Oakville, Ontario for a few months until the guest house he was staying was lost in a fire. Then he moved to Niagara on the Lake where he almost finished Under the Volcano. His neighbor's house was hit by lightening and it too burned to the ground.

Malcolm Lowry died in 1957.

And he had placed the poor ragged cornflowers reverently on a neglected grave . . . That was Oakville. - But Oaxaca or Oakville, what difference? Or between a tavern that opened at four o'clock in the afternoon, and one that opened (save holidays) at four o'clock in the morning?
