Centennial College has a student population of 14,400 full-time students and 28,000 in continuing education. It offers over 150 programs of study and also has four campuses located across Toronto. Centennial also has an international presence and has opened remote learning centers in China, India, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.
The main business goal was to make the program content easier to navigate and increase conversion numbers. The secondary business objective was to implement a better content management system. The CMS needed to be easier to manage. It also needed to follow best CMS practices including a publish approval process and versioning control.
The following were the third-level objectives:
- Use the online course calendar as a central repository for program and course information for both online and print.
- Improve on-page SEO.
- Integrate the custom application code for the program database seamlessly into the main Centennial College Umbraco content management system.
- Make the software application WCAG 2.0 Level AA compliant as part of AODA requirements.
The online course calendar is a fully custom ASP.Net and MS SQL application. Soulfx started with multiple rounds of business requirements gathering then completely redesigned the user experience. The templates were developed to be both responsive and meet WCAG Level 2.0 AA rules as part of AODA compliance.
A publish-approval process was implemented which included update notifications to the super admin, versioning control and a lock-down on content after final publishing to meet Ministry of Education requirements.
Soulfx designed and developed a GUI Dashboard for the super admin for managing course information.
Soulfx also added the ability for users to generate PDFs on-the-fly, role-based permissions so user groups can only edit specific parts of the programs. RSS feeds to push to the Centennial mobile app and integration with the Widen digital asset cloud repository.
In addition, the application was integrated with the search on the homepage of the Centennial College site allowing predictive search by career type.
Finally, Soulfx created a process to push the database content through XML to Adobe InDesign files for the print version of the course calendar.
With all the improvements for on-page SEO the online course calendar is growing traffic organically, which has reduced the effort for off-page SEO.
The custom content management system gives non-technical staff the ability to make changes to each edition and versioning control gives the super admin a window to overall changes with the ability to rollback at any time. This has reduced dependence on the Centennial IT staff.
The program search embedded on the main college Web site helps prospects find program information by keyword or career path. Finally, the course calendar is WCAG 2.0 level AA compliant, which meets AODA regulations for public institutions.View Website
